What Makes the Potato So Remarkable?
Share
When most people think of potatoes, they think of food—not skincare.
Yet beneath its simple appearance, the potato is a remarkably complex botanical, naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds that contribute to its unique botanical profile.

While potatoes have long been valued as a nourishing food, scientists continue to study the surprising variety of naturally occurring compounds they contain, including:
- Vitamin C, a naturally occurring antioxidant.
- Polyphenols, plant compounds recognized for their antioxidant properties.
- Flavonoids, naturally occurring compounds found throughout the plant kingdom.
- Carotenoids, naturally occurring pigments especially abundant in yellow- and orange-fleshed potato varieties.
- Potassium, one of the potato's most abundant naturally occurring minerals.
- Magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, minerals that contribute to the potato's overall nutritional composition.
- Naturally occurring enzymes, which play important roles in the potato's biological processes.
- Complex carbohydrates and natural starches, which give the potato its distinctive structure.
- Amino acids and naturally occurring proteins, which are part of the potato's overall botanical composition.
These naturally occurring compounds exist as part of an intricate botanical system rather than in isolation. Their composition varies naturally from one potato to another, influenced by the variety itself, soil quality, climate, growing practices, harvest timing, and storage conditions.
It is this remarkable complexity—not any single vitamin, mineral, antioxidant, or plant compound—that continues to make the potato an intriguing subject of scientific research and one of nature's most distinctive botanicals.

Not All Potatoes Are Created Equal
One of the most fascinating aspects of potatoes is that no two varieties are exactly alike.
Different varieties naturally contain different concentrations of these compounds, and their overall botanical composition is also influenced by soil quality, climate, farming practices, harvest timing, and storage.
This is why ingredient selection matters.
Rather than relying on a single variety, Diorthono's signature ingredient foundation combines organic Russet Potato and organic Japanese Sweet Potato. Each contributes its own distinct botanical profile, creating a broader and more complementary ingredient foundation than either variety could achieve alone.
Exceptional skincare begins with exceptional ingredients—but ingredients alone do not define a formulation. Their quality, how they are grown, harvested, and prepared, and how they complement one another all influence the finished product.

The Beginning of Diorthono
Diorthono began with an unexpected experience involving extreme heat exposure. I turned to a potato blend I developed, inspired by generations of Mediterranean skincare traditions passed down through the women in my family.
Using that carefully developed blend, I never expected the remarkable results. After applying it to heat-exposed skin, the skin responded almost immediately, feeling soothed, more comfortable, and looking remarkably renewed. The remarkable results inspired me to continue researching, testing, and refining the formulation. That experience marked the beginning of years of research and testing that would eventually become Diorthono.
Throughout that journey, I continued to observe consistent results. Time and again, my confidence in the potato only grew, reinforcing my decision to make it the foundation of every formulation I created.
Over time, what began as a deeply personal discovery evolved into a philosophy rooted in purity, exceptional ingredient quality, and a deep respect for nature's complexity. When Diorthono was established, that philosophy became the foundation of the brand.
Today, every Diorthono formulation begins with our signature ingredient foundation of organic Russet Potato and organic Japanese Sweet Potato, before being complemented by carefully selected organic, naturally derived, antioxidant-rich botanical oils and other premium ingredients. Every ingredient is intentionally selected not only for its individual qualities, but for how each one works alongside the others to strengthen the formulation as a whole.

Why the Potato Still Matters
Our understanding of botanicals continues to evolve, and the potato remains an intriguing subject of scientific research because of the diverse plant compounds found naturally within it.
While much is still being discovered, one thing has become increasingly clear:
The potato is far more extraordinary than most people realize.
Nature rarely relies on a single compound. Instead, it creates botanicals of remarkable complexity—countless naturally occurring substances working together as part of an intricate and beautifully balanced system.
The potato is no exception.
For thousands of years, it has nourished people around the world. Today, it continues to inspire researchers, formulators, and those who appreciate the surprising depth found within nature's most familiar ingredients.
Sometimes the most familiar ingredients are the ones most deserving of a second look.
Pure. Potent. Antioxidant-Rich.
